THE IMPACT OF MOSHOOD ABIOLA POLYTECHNIC, ON ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE ECONOMY - Ogunbiyi Ahmed.

Ogunbiyi Ahmed write

Moshood Abiola Polytechnic also known as MAPOLY is a
tertiary learning institution in Abeokuta , Ogun State ,
Nigeria . The Ojere campus is in the South-Eastern part of
Abeokuta, covering about 960 hectares of rolling land
bounded by the Ogun River to the south. It is named after
Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola , who was elected
President of Nigeria in 1993, but prevented from taking
office. The Polytechnic started on
two temporary campuses, Oke-Egunya and Onikolobo,
moving to the Ojere campus between April 1985 and
March 1988. By the 2004/2005 session, the student
population was 18,878, with about 520 academic and
non-academic staff.

Presently, The institution has now been upgraded to Moshood
Abiola University of Science and Technology.... And the
institution is now 45th State University in Nigeria. This transition has put the students and entire city of Abeokuta in the state of quagmire as this decision will affect the economy of the major markets around the vicinity.

Since the inception of the institution(MAPOLY) major markets such as panseke, kuto, omida and lafenwa has been greatly patronize by Mapoly Students.. It was also observed that, transporters in Ogun State also lies in the existence of this institution in terms of converging students from Lagos(Oshodi, Sango, Abule egba, iyana ipaja, ikorodu, as so on to Abeokuta) which this has positively influenced the economy of Ogun State due to large number of MAPOLY Students. In lieu of this fact, the economy of Ogun State might crawl or recessed if MAPOLY is taken to another location.

According to findings, it was observed that amongst all institutions in Ogun State, Only MOSHOOD ABIOLA POLYTECHNIC has been the only institution funding itself independently without the intervention of government.

The big question now is; is this how the state government wants to compensate the stakeholders(Management, non academics, staffs, artisans, traders) of the institution whom has invested a lot in the school to ensure continuity and to avoid indefinite Strike by ASUP.

Based on all this findings, I will however recommend the following to Ogun State Government.

1. The government should call the members of the ASUP for dialogue to discuss on how MAPOLY and MAUSTECH will run effectively on campus.

2. The government should include member of the Union in the technical committee.

3. The government should build more buildings, lecture rooms, More offices and repair the pot holes to make the school look more standard.

4. The government should ensure they pay Staff of MAPOLY there salaries and other bonuses they are entitle to.

5. The finance of the institution should be from the government and not in school finding itself.

6. Since those lecturers in MAPOLY are the one's that built the institution to where it is today, the government should compensate them by allowing those of them that are yet to meet the necessary requirements by including them as lecturer pending the time they upgrade their certificate instead of bringing lecturers or professor else where to enjoy others people joy.
